True Democracy, WMD, Children Overboard, AWB Affair, etc

One day after dinner we were chatting idly when a colleagues started the topic of democracy. In his opinion the democracy in Australia is only an illusion because ordinary citizens don't have the right to vote for or against legislations; nor do they have any say in whether their sons should be sent to fight a war in another country. He said he had been thinking about true democracy for some time. In this true democracy, every adult citizen is a member of the parliament. It sounds outrageous, doesn't it? His friend called it extreme democracy, and I labelled it Greek democracy. Well, he's actually given it some thought as he explained that it's not anarchy he was talking about. The goverment will still be running the day-to-day affairs of the nation, but the important legislations should be passed by all the citizens. How? Electronically, of course. As he put it, the time has now come for true democracy. Has it?

Who are the guardians of the democratic system? The coded law, the state machinery, or the electorate? What happens when the electorate is becoming more an more interest-driven rather than principle-driven? (to be continued)
